How YOU can feel more empowered in your day to day life

“So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice.

But now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero”

Katy Perry’s song “Roar” is stuck on repeat on my phone this morning, such an inspiring (and addictive!) track it made me want to write an article on how YOU can feel more empowered in your day to day life.

1. Be The CEO of You Inc.

YOU inc represents all the various areas of your life, including: career, relationships, finances, your health, having FUN (of course!), creativity and personal growth. It is very important to invest in and be mindful of each of these areas to present your best self on a day-to-day basis. Remember life isn’t always a series of events, you are in the driver’s seat (not someone else!) because it is your life and you need to take an active role in decisions.

When I was working at Pinewood Studios I was told the hardest thing about life was knowing when to say “No” and when to say “Yes.” decide what commitments get added to your plate.

2. Asses your words

We have all heard that being positive is important and can make a difference… so why aren’t we doing it all the time? Often we limit our potential because we embrace negative beliefs. It is our mindset that defines what we believe is possible and impossible. So if we continue to reinforce that starting a new job, running a race, learning to drive, is impossible then that’s the song that runs through our mind. Remind yourself that you can, you will, and to believe in yourself.

3. Remove the ‘Should’ factor

I should be studying….. travelling to Africa……volunteer at my children’s school….be more happy. The shoulds go on and on. It is important to focus on what we WANT to do and be rather than what we THINK we should be doing.

4. Redefining Success

Our own definition of success changes over the years, but we do not change our mindset, goals and actions for the life we want to live today. After uni I defined success in terms of title and money but soon realize that success for me was about being fulfilled, making a difference and loving what I do. How do YOU define success? What steps can you take to create the life you want?

5. Set a goal that is important to you.

Take action on a goal you have. The great thing about having a goal that excites you, and is a priority to you, you are focused and feel motivated on a daily basis. It gives a little spark in your life and gives you a purpose when you start your day.

6. Recognize when you are doing something well

“I made an excellent breakfast this morning.” “I cheered Sarah up today when she was upset. I’m glad I helped her feel better.”

We are so often hard on ourselves in life, be kind to yourself. Similarly compliment others when they did something well. A positive attitude is infectious.
